Urgent Care Q & A

What is urgent care?

Urgent care is a method of delivering care to patients who are experiencing an acute medical issue. It serves to bridge the gap between a normally scheduled office visit and a trip to the emergency room.

Even healthy people sometimes develop unexpected health issues. Accidents can happen at any time, often even within your own environment. Having a trusted medical team can make it easier to navigate a sudden medical need.

No one is at their best when they’re injured or ill. Trying to determine where to go and working with an unfamiliar health team can complicate an already stressful situation. Stand-alone urgent care centers don’t know the full scope of your personal and family health history.

What kinds of issues can be treated in an urgent care visit?

Many different issues can be diagnosed and treated in an urgent care setting. Some examples of health issues that bring people to urgent care include:

  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Minor lacerations and abrasions
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin rash
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Burns
  • Abdominal pain
  • Infections
  • Constipation or diarrhea

These are just some common health problems that can necessitate an urgent care visit.

How do I know if urgent care is the right treatment setting?

Many people are uncertain whether an urgent care visit is the right choice for their medical needs. One factor is whether your symptoms can wait to be assessed and treated during a routinely scheduled visit at Sigma Primary Care.

If not, urgent care may be a great treatment option. Coming in right away can put you on a path toward recovery as quickly as possible.

If you experience any of the following, the emergency room is a better fit for your needs:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Visibly broken bones
  • Asthma attack
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

Emergency rooms are equipped with not only the medical equipment needed to address serious health issues but staff with special training in emergency care needs.

If you aren’t sure whether your issue is appropriate for urgent care, call the office to determine your next steps. Online booking is always an option for less time-sensitive needs.
